Ecco the Dolphin is Making a Splash with a New Collection and Sequel!

Ecco is back!

If there’s one thing we love here at Out of Sync Gaming, it’s a franchise that doesn’t just follow the rules. Back in the early ‘90s, while most of us were busy jumping on Goombas or blasting through loops as a blue hedgehog, there was a game that felt… different. It was haunting, beautiful, and—let’s be honest—infuriatingly difficult. I’m talking about Ecco the Dolphin.

For years, the series has been floating in the depths of gaming history, but the tide has finally turned. A&R Atelier has officially announced Ecco the Dolphin: Complete, and it’s looking like the definitive tribute to SEGA’s most iconic aquatic hero.

What’s New?

This isn't just a simple port. Ecco the Dolphin: Complete is being billed as a "comprehensive journey through time." The package is set to include every version of the original Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time. We’re talking the 8-bit Master System versions, the 16-bit Mega Drive/Genesis classics, and everything in between.

For those of us who grew up with the "Welcome to the Machine" nightmare, seeing these games preserved is a treat. But the real headline? There is a brand-new contemporary Ecco game included in the collection.

The Return of the Mastermind

What makes this news truly special is the team behind it. This isn't an outside studio trying to mimic the magic; it’s being led by Ed Annunziata, the original creator. He’s reunited members of the original art, music, and programming teams to ensure that the "atmosphere and mysteries" of Ecco’s world are brought forward exactly as they were meant to be.

The new game is said to "weave the history of the franchise together," bringing Ecco into the modern era while maintaining that unique Metroidvania-under-the-sea gameplay that made the originals so memorable.

Built for the Modern Gamer

While the original games are being "preserved and immutable," the collection adds a few modern bells and whistles:

  • Speedrunning Support: Built-in tools for those who want to race through the ocean.

  • Meta Quests: Challenges that thread through all the games in the universe.

  • Custom Courses: A level-creator style feature that lets you share your own underwater paths with the community.

Out of Sync Gaming Take

At Out of Sync, we often ask, "Does it still hold up today?" While the original Ecco games can be punishing, their atmosphere is unmatched. The haunting soundtracks and the sense of isolation in the deep blue are timeless. Seeing the original creators return to finish what they started—especially after the series has been dormant for 25 years—is exactly the kind of "passion project" news we live for.

There’s no word yet on a release date or platforms, but keep checking back to Out of Sync and the official website for when it gets announced.
