Update: Nintendo Direct Rumours: Points to Early February
Update - 30th January 2025
So, it seems like the anticipated and rumoured Nitendo Direct allegedly happening next week on Thrusday, 5th is shaping up to be a Developer Direct. NateTheHate stated on X, that he believes this is going to be a Developer Direct, which mostly focuses on third party publishers and not Nintendo developed games.
Either way, I’m still excited to see what get’s announced if the Nintendo Direct does, indeed, happen.
Original Story
The Nintendo Direct Rumour Mill Get’s Started for 2026!
While we’re all currently looking forward to the dedicated Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream showcase later this week, it seems Nintendo might not be finished with us just yet. According to new reports, a second, more expansive Nintendo Direct could be just around the corner.
Known industry insider NateTheHate shared on his latest podcast that Nintendo is likely sticking to its long-standing tradition of a general February broadcast. If these reports are accurate, we’re looking at a very crowded—and very exciting—start to the month.
The Rumour: A General Direct on the Horizon
The rumour suggests that while this week's Tomodachi Direct is a focused deep dive into a single title, a general Direct is being lined up for the first week of February.
Potential Date: Thursday, 5th February 2026
The Source: NateTheHate, who has a solid track record with Nintendo's scheduling patterns.
The Scope: Unlike the Tomodachi stream, this would be a general presentation covering the Switch's 2026 roadmap and potentially more news regarding upcoming hardware.
Why a Second Direct Makes Sense
Two presentations in two weeks might seem like a lot. However, this strategy allows Nintendo to give a niche fan-favourite like Tomodachi Life its own dedicated space without it being overshadowed by bigger announcements.
By clearing the schedule this week, it leaves the floor wide open for the "heavy hitters" fans have been asking for. 2026 is a massive year for Nintendo history—it’s the 40th anniversary of both The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. Many of us in the community are hoping to see how Nintendo plans to celebrate these milestones, whether through new titles or long-requested ports like Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD. Sadly, we’re not sure if the Metroid series is going to get the same love and attention for its 40th Anniversary, but Nintendo is always full of surprises.
What We’re Looking For
Beyond the anniversaries, there are several titles we’ve been tracking for a while. We’re still waiting on firm release dates for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and more information on the rumoured and much requested next 3D Mario project. A general Direct in February would be the logical place to set the tone for the rest of the year.
The Out of Sync Take
We’ve always appreciated when Nintendo takes the time to highlight smaller, quirkier titles on their own. If this rumour holds true, it suggests they have a very full plate for 2026. Whether it’s a massive new Zelda reveal or just a few solid updates on the games we’re already playing, it’s a great time to be a Nintendo fan.
