Following a relentless summer of gaming showcases, Nintendo took to the digital stage on Tuesday, June 9th, to deliver an absolute blockbuster of a Nintendo Direct. Clocking in at a jam-packed 50 minutes,offering a defining look at the twilight era of the original Nintendo Switch while officially blowing the doors wide open for what’s to come with the Switch 2.

If you missed the direct don’t worry, here is a recap of the biggest reveals, surprise trailers, and key release dates from the show.

The Zelda Rumours Were True and Sora Steals the Show

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake: Closing out the showcase in classic Nintendo fashion, the company confirmed that the iconic Nintendo 64 masterpiece is being completely reborn for a new generation. Developed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, the brief teaser trailer featured a stunning look at Link sleeping peacefully in his Kokiri forest hut before confirming a 2026 launch window.

Kingdom Hearts 4: In a spectacular twist, Square Enix’s highly anticipated sequel resurfaced during a Nintendo presentation. Offering our best look yet at Sora exploring the mysterious city of Quadratum, the title was officially confirmed to be in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. While it doesn't have a release date yet, fans won't have to wait to get their fix on the go; the Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] is launching on Switch 2 on October 8th, with a playable demo for Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind dropping on the eShop immediately.

First-Party Heavyweights: Return to Wuhu Island & RPG Epics

Nintendo's internal studios came out swinging, showcasing an impressive lineup of sequels, spin-offs, and release dates for the upcoming year.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort: Dust off your wrist straps! Nintendo is taking players back to Wuhu Island exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2. Launching on October 22nd, this new entry features 12 sports utilizing the precision of the new Joy-Con 2 controllers. Returning favourites like Boxing, Archery, and Table Tennis are joined by brand-new additions, including a highly intriguing "Thumb Wrestling" mode and leisure sports like Skateboarding.

Xenoblade Genesis: Monolith Soft is back. A surprise teaser revealed Xenoblade Genesis, a brand-new entry in the sprawling JRPG franchise coming to Switch 2 in 2027. Early footage hints that this game will look and feel drastically different from the previous trilogy.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave: Strategy fans won’t have to wait much longer for the next tactical grid-based epic. Nintendo locked in a firm release date of September 17th for this highly anticipated title.

Splatoon Raiders & Rhythm Heaven Groove: Fast-paced action is on the menu this summer. The multiplayer spin-off Splatoon Raiders received a vibrant new gameplay trailer ahead of its July 23rd release (with a dedicated standalone Direct scheduled for June 30th). Meanwhile, the quirky rhythm collection Rhythm Heaven Groove locked down a July 2nd launch date, boasting 80 new minigames and extensive co-op options.

Third-Party & Next-Gen Upgrades: True Power Unleashed

The Direct made it abundantly clear that the Nintendo Switch 2 will not suffer from the third-party performance hurdles of its predecessor, showcasing an array of current-gen blockbusters natively running on the hardware.

Minecraft (Native Switch 2 Edition): Mojang is bringing a dedicated, upgraded version of Minecraft to the Switch 2 later this year. It features dramatically improved visuals, enhanced lighting, and realistic shadow effects, with all existing player worlds safely carrying over.

FromSoftware’s The Duskbloods: The highly secretive, upcoming project from the creators of Elden Ring made an appearance. Nintendo confirmed that a Closed Network Test for The Duskbloods will be taking place this summer, giving players their first taste of FromSoftware's next dark universe.

Final Fantasy Resonance: Square Enix showcased a beautiful new HD-2D turn-based RPG. Final Fantasy Resonance is a multi-platform release slated to hit both the original Switch and Switch 2 on October 22nd, 2026.

The Quick Hits Portfolio: The Switch 2 library is filling up fast with an influx of massive ports and expansions. Notable callouts included Lies of P: Complete Edition (August 6th), Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion (October 9th), Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword (September 25th), Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 (Holiday 2026), and Shift Up's stylish action title Stellar Blade coming later this year.

Out of Sync's Verdict

There was something for everyone in this direct from the Zelda Ocarina of Time remake to the Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.
