Resident Evil Requiem Review Roundup: Is RE9 the Best in the Series?

RE is back and the reviews are in!

It seems Capcom has another "S-Rank" hit on its hands. Released on February 27, 2026, Resident Evil Requiem (the ninth mainline entry) has launched to some of the highest critical praise in the franchise's 30-year history.

The Scoreboard

The general consensus is that Requiem is the most polished blend of the series’ two identities—pure survival horror and high-octane action—since the original Resident Evil 4.

  • Metacritic (PS5): 89

  • OpenCritic: 88 (96% Critics Recommend)

  • Steam User Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (96%)

Major Outlet Reviews

  • Eurogamer gave it a 5/5 - "A masterful celebration of RE’s history that isn't afraid to break its own rules."

  • IGN gave it a 9/10- "Breathtakingly tense. The shift between 1st and 3rd person feels natural and necessary."

  • Game Informer gave it a 9.75/10 - "The dual-protagonist system is a stroke of genius, offering two complete games in one."

  • Nintendo Life gave it a 9/10 - "A technical marvel on Switch 2. Capcom has set a new bar for third-party handheld ports."

Out of Sync Gaming Take

I’m playing the game on the PS5 and I’m about 7 hours into the game. To be honest, I’ve not been the biggest fan of the RE series. I played the first one, scared out of my mind, on the Playstation back when it came out. But I haven’t really played any of them since. What was I thinking? RE9 is living up to the hype and so far, in my opinion, deserves all the scores it’s been getting. Check back for my full review in the coming weeks. Are you playing RE9? What do you think?
