Retro Gaming News: Week of August 17th
What Happened Around This Week in Gaming Throughout the Decades
Every week in video game history has its defining moments, but this mid-August calendar stretch holds some of the most influential hardware launches and narrative breakthroughs the industry has ever seen. Here is your weekly breakdown across four decades!
1989: Sega Fires the First Shot
In mid-August 1989, Sega officially launched the Sega Genesis in North America. Boasting "High Definition Graphics" and bundled with the arcade hit Altered Beast, the sleek black console promised true arcade power in the living room—initiating the "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" campaign that defined 90s gaming culture.
1991: The Super Nintendo Strikes Back
Nintendo didn't sit quietly for long. On August 23, 1991, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) officially arrived in North America. Packaged with Super Mario World and featuring groundbreaking Mode-7 graphics in titles like F-Zero, the 16-bit war reached critical mass, cementing a rivalry gamers still argue about today.
2007: "Would You Kindly?"
Jump forward to August 21, 2007, when 2K Games unleashed BioShock on Xbox 360 and PC. Players were introduced to the falling underwater utopia of Rapture, genetic Plasmids, Big Daddies, and one of the most famous narrative twists in gaming history. It set a brand-new standard for environmental storytelling in action games.
2011: Human Evolution Goes Cyberpunk
Rounding out the decade on August 23, 2011, developer Eidos-Mōntreal released Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Serving as a prequel to the legendary 2000 original, it successfully modernised the immersive sim genre with player-choice mechanics, golden cyberpunk aesthetics, and Adam Jensen’s iconic quote: "I never asked for this."
The Out of Sync Take
What a week in gaming history! The SNES is my favourite console of all time. I remember when it was launched, and when I finally mowed enough lawns and saved enough money to buy the system! I know we were supposed to be in the console wars back in the 90s , but I secretly was jealous of all the Genesis gamers with their more arcade and grown-up titles. What a great time that was. I didn’t play Bioshock and Deus Ex: Human Revolution until recently. They are two awesome games that have influences still found in games today!
