Horizon Hunters Gathering Details Revealed
Horizon Hunters Gathering: Everything We Know About Guerrilla’s Stylized Co-op Spin-off
For years, rumors of a “Horizon Online” project have circled the industry like a flock of Glinthawks. Yesterday, the wait finally ended. Guerrilla Games officially pulled back the curtain on Horizon Hunters Gathering, a tactical three-player co-op action game coming to PlayStation 5 and PC.
While the mainline series starring Aloy is known for its jaw-dropping photorealism, Hunters Gathering is taking a bold, stylized leap into a new aesthetic. Here is a deep dive into the gameplay, the story, and how you can play it later this month.
A Bold New Look: Why the Stylized Art Style?
The first thing fans noticed in the reveal trailer is the visual shift. Horizon Hunters Gathering ditches the hyper-realistic Decima Engine look of Forbidden West for a vibrant, "painterly" aesthetic that some are comparing to Arcane or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
According to Game Director Arjan Bak, this wasn't just a creative whim. The stylized look allows for more frenetic, over-the-top combat animations and better visual clarity during chaotic three-player battles. It clearly distinguishes the title as a "social experience" rather than a lonely trek through the post-apocalypse.
Gameplay: Tactical Hunting and Roguelite Builds
Don't let the "cartoony" visuals fool you—this is still Horizon. The core "machine dismantling" loop remains the heart of the game. You’ll still need to target specific components—like a Thunderjaw’s Disc Launcher or a Ravager’s Cannon—to survive.
Core Mechanics:
The Roster: At launch, players choose from a unique roster of Hunters (including newcomers Rem, Sun, and Axel). Each has a distinct playstyle, ranging from heavy melee hammers to high-precision bows.
Roguelite Perks: During missions, players earn randomized perks and weapon upgrades. This ensures that no two "hunts" feel the same, allowing you to craft specialized builds on the fly.
The Hub: Between missions, you’ll return to the Hunters Gathering, a social campsite where you can customize your character, upgrade permanent gear, and meet up with friends.
Game Modes: From Hordes to Dungeons
Guerrilla revealed two primary ways to play at launch:
Machine Incursion: A high-intensity wave-based mode where players defend tribal settlements from escalating machine assaults, culminating in a massive boss encounter.
Cauldron Descent: These are essentially "raids." You and your squad will navigate multi-stage dungeons with shifting layouts, solving environmental puzzles and facing brutal machine guardians.
Is it Canon?
Yes. Guerrilla confirmed that Hunters Gathering is fully canon and set after the events of Horizon Forbidden West. The narrative premise involves Aloy tasking Erend with recruiting a new generation of elite hunters to deal with the rising machine threat. While you can play the campaign solo with NPC companions, the game is designed to be an evolving live-service title with new story chapters added post-launch.
The Out of Sync Take
With Sony’s recent failures in the multiplayer shooter genre, we think Horizon Hunters Gathering has a tough battle ahead to be successful. I’m sure there will be a core group of Horizon fans that will flock to this release, but we’re not sure it will capture the wider gaming audience’s attention.
