PS5 Pro Rumour: Is a Massive PSSR 2.0 Update Coming in 2026?

Rumours indicate that the PS5 Pro is getting an update in March

If you recently treated yourself to a PlayStation 5 Pro, you might be in for a very happy 2026. While the console is already the most powerful machine in the Sony stable, recent whispers from industry insiders suggest that a "transformative" software update is on the horizon that could push the hardware even further.

PSSR 2.0?

The big news centres around PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)—Sony’s AI-powered upscaling tech. According to a leak from the well-known tech enthusiast Moore’s Law Is Dead, Sony is internally testing "PSSR 2.0" (referenced in documents as MFSR2). This isn't just a minor patch; it’s being described as a "complete overhaul" similar to the jump from AMD’s FSR 3 to FSR 4. The goal? To take games that currently sit around the 70–80fps mark and push them comfortably into the 120fps bracket without sacrificing visual clarity.

Why It Matters

Sony’s lead architect, Mark Cerny, has often spoken about the balance between raw hardware and clever software. If these rumours are true, it shows that Sony is committed to making the PS5 Pro a "future-proof" machine that can handle the most demanding titles of the mid-to-late 2020s. We might still be a few years away from a PS6, but with PSSR 2.0, the "Pro" might finally feel like the “Pro” machine we were all expecting it to be.
