Super Mario Galaxy Trailer Features Yoshi

The latest Super Mario Galaxy Trailer is here and it looks out of this world!

It’s time to blast off! Following the Nintendo Direct on Sunday, 25th January, we’ve finally laid eyes on the second full trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This sequel to 2023’s billion-dollar hit is looking to be even bigger, weirder, and more nostalgic than the first.

Here is a friendly breakdown of the trailer’s biggest reveals and what you can expect when the film hits cinemas this spring.

To the Stars: What We Learnt from the New Trailer

The latest footage confirms that we are leaving the Mushroom Kingdom behind for a cosmic adventure. While the first film was a love letter to the NES and SNES eras, this sequel is leaning heavily into the Wii-era magic of Super Mario Galaxy and even some modern Super Mario Odyssey charm.

Yoshi Has Arrived!

The biggest highlight was undoubtedly the first proper look at Yoshi. After being teased in the post-credits scene of the first movie, the lovable green dinosaur is finally front and centre. In a hilarious nod to Nintendo’s history, the trailer even shows Yoshi wielding a SNES Super Scope like a pro.

Interestingly, the trailer didn't reveal a celebrity voice for Yoshi, leading fans to speculate that the film might use his original game vocalisations (the iconic chirps of Kazumi Totaka) rather than a Hollywood A-lister.

A Star-Studded Galactic Cast

We already knew the original gang was returning, but the "Galaxy" roster is expanding. The new trailer gave us more footage of:

  • Brie Larson as Rosalina: The protector of the Lumas looks stunning in her cinematic debut, and her "Comet Observatory" is every bit as ethereal as it was in the games.

  • Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.: It looks like Bowser’s son will be the primary catalyst for the plot, using his magic paintbrush to try and restore his father to his full size.

Deep Cuts and Easter Eggs

Nintendo and Illumination have clearly been digging through the archives. Eagle-eyed fans spotted:

  • Baby Mario and Baby Luigi: Suggesting we might get some Yoshi’s Island flashbacks.

  • Birdo and Mouser: Making their first appearances, much to the delight of Super Mario Bros. 2 fans.

  • Odyssey Vibes: A sequence showing Mario and Luigi on motorbikes in a desert (very reminiscent of the Sand Kingdom) suggests the "Galaxy" title might cover multiple modern Mario games.

New Release Date

In a cheeky move, the release date has been brought forward. Instead of April 3rd, the film will now premiere in the UK and US on 1st April 2026. Mark your calendars—and maybe keep an eye out for any April Fools’ Day pranks from Nintendo!

Why We’re Excited

The first movie was criticised by some for being a bit "safe," but The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks to be embracing the more surreal and imaginative side of the franchise. With the animation reportedly finished and the film now in post-production, the level of detail in the "Gusty Garden" and "Honeyhop" inspired locations looks truly out of this world.
